rags his feet. I can see he isn’t focused. I call to him and he doesn’t respond. I call again and yet again, and still his mind is consumed by something from another world. I look at my son and remember how once I was the one thing that consumed his interest, his burst of spontaneous excitement when he’d see me enter the room or spot me from his stroller as I was walking home from the train.
I call his name again and tell him it’s time to brush his teeth. He groans heavily and mumbles something under his breath. He slowly gets up on his feet and makes sure to take his life-dependent object with him. Its power is immense and wonderful at the same time as it sucks in his attention, drowning out the reality around him. It gives him oxygen to breathe, it nourishes him. He continues to carry it around to breakfast and lunch, and is angry, irrational, emotional and aggravated when asked to turn it off. It’s his life-line and ironically it was created around the time he was born. Introduced to it since infancy, he doesn’t know anything different and has grown attached to it. I ask him several times to put his shoes on and he’s still a bit checked out of the real world, too tired or lazy to find them, too distracted to comprehend what the task at hand is required of him.
We try to leave it at home when we go outside, but as soon as we step inside the house, he’s already plugged into it. His sister is catching on and her condition is much worse. She knows I don’t approve of some of its functionality and she uses it without my approval. When I take it away, she rebels, tells me that I don’t care for her.
What happened to my children since the introduction of the iPad? They are no longer limited to the physical boundaries of the TV room, nor are they limited to the TV schedule. At a very young age they have access to expand the boundaries of their imagination at their finger tips at any time of the day, any place. And the lines between reality and virtual reality are seeming to blur in their young minds. Their personalities becomes shaped and consumed by what their minds feed on. As parents we can try to police them or be their friend, and the job is harder than ever because the omnipresence of the iPad is greater than anything our parents have had to shelter us from. Setting rules for electronic use is not easy when you are faced with angry, bitter, irritated youth. Books and physical games can no longer compete with an object that instantly hijacks a child’s attention. I look at my children, they are happy, yet they are far away. iPad and kids – we are almost literally separated by a screen.
