We all fail at it one time or another. Let’s say the goal is to lose weight. We get ourselves mentally prepared, buy all the right groceries, sign up to a gym or get a personal trainer. At first, it all looks promising. We’re doing it. Eating the right stuff, exercising more than usual, and then BAM! Somethings stops you. A birthday dinner, a few days off rom exercising, tasting more than one of grandma’s baked goodies that she made just for you, or stepping on that dreaded scale. And what happens to your motivation? Poof! You have been rear-ended and spun away from all that hard work and that good planning. You are no longer facing your goal anymore!

So what do you do?

It’s so easy to just stop. And that’s what most people end up doing. Thoughts start clouding your mind like, “I’ll start again tomorrow”, “I’ll just have another bite, what will that do? Nothing”. Wrong! It’s EVERYTHING! It’s a step in the wrong direction is what it is.

Here is a little visualization scenario to make this easy for you.

Imagine you are planning a trip to Rome. You envision yourself walking the pebbled streets and admiring old architecture and the grandeur of the Colosseum. Yet to actually get to Rome, many things need to happen – you need to book your trip, pack your bags, get to the airport on time. Then once at the airport, there is a check-in, a baggage check-in, getting to your assigned seat on the plane, all passengers have to be accounted for, all the bags too, and then there is the take-off line. All these little steps that have to be taken in order to set your dream into reality.

So now do you see what I mean about that extra cookie helping, that exercise that won’t happen today, that dreaded scale that messed up your mood because it moved up or stayed the same after you have been so faithful to your new healthy lifestyle?

 These are all bottlenecks.

They are the traffic jam to your airport ride, the sick passenger that needs to be escorted off the plane while you wait, the thunderstorm that needs to pass for your take-off. But if you don’t account for these bottlenecks, and if you get off that plane or never get on it, how will you ever get to Rome? So put the waffles back and make an egg omelette instead. Move forward and you will be one step closer to your dream.

Your flight might get delayed, but don’t toss your dream out the window. Setbacks happen, traffic lights will turn red, but the journey doesn’t stop at a red light and the driver of the car knows this. He is not going to make a U-turn and drive back! One ice cream is not going to make you gain weight, but 2 or 3 will start a pattern, a wrong destination. You were planning for a summer in Rome, but ended up in Siberia in winter. Treat a set back as a scraped knee. Get back up and go where you were heading. Because only you can say, “Wow, so this is Rome! Now let’s take a selfie in front of the Colosseum!”.
